Nichia, the world's largest LED manufacturer and inventor of high-brightness blue and white LEDs, announced the addition of the first medium-power LED that can provide the high-quality light needed to meet the demands of telework and indoor video recording.
Over the last 50 years, Nichia has proven its commitment to improving overall light performance and quality through R&D and manufacturing for phosphors and LEDs. Since the invention of the high-brightness blue LED and then the white LED, it has not been Nichia's goal to simply replace traditional lighting technologies with more efficient LEDs. The industry deserves and can receive more.
Over the past few years, Nichia has aggressively reaffirmed the importance of "light quality". It can sometimes be difficult to demonstrate how an object may appear differently in the light, or the level of personal comfort or well-being that such lighting provides, with strict performance measures. However, Nichia introduces new products based on this concept to demonstrate the value and importance of “light quality”, such as the Optisolis™, which reproduces natural light, and the H6 Series, which offers vibrant and beautiful colors while maintaining high efficacy.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Technical Committee has defined the Television Lighting Consistency Index (TLCI), an indicator for expressing the quality of light. TLCI measures the color reproduction of illuminated objects when they are projected onto a screen via a camera. Video and images shot under high TLCI lighting have higher color reproducibility than those shot under ordinary LED lighting, allowing users to enjoy natural, vivid and beautiful images on TVs, PCs and smartphone screens. Higher color reproducibility also makes it possible to reduce the time and cost previously spent on color editing.
Traditionally, TLCI has been an often required index for TV recording and broadcast applications such as lighting in stadiums and indoors. Nichia has a high power LED lineup with great TLCI metrics specifically targeted at stadium lighting, including the NV4WB35AM, NV4WB35AR and NVSW519A series. However, with the continued adoption of remote working as well as other new online activities, there is a growing demand for indoor lighting with high color reproducibility via a camera, such as virtual meetings, video recordings and more. To respond to this demand, Nichia has developed and launched a TLCI option with the NFSW757G-P5H6/R9050j85t90, which achieves high TLCI metrics for lighting in indoor video production.
By combining Nichia's unique phosphor technology and GE Current's TriGain® Technology, a Daintree Company, this LED simultaneously provides high TLCI, high color rendering / TM-30 and high efficiency; this is not possible with current high color rendering LEDs. This LED enables the design of luminaires suitable for teleworking, online meetings, indoor video recording and photographing with smartphones. Nichia believes this will greatly contribute to improving people's quality of work and life.
